Amsterdam Dam Square Apartments

Dam Square, or de Dam, as it is known locally, is one of the city’s most easily identifiable landmarks. Considered by many to be the historical heart of the city, it dates back to the 13th century. Located just south of Central Station at the bottom of Damrak, it is a cobbled plaza with two roads intersecting across the middle. This is a great place to enjoy a frothy coffee outside one of the many perimeter cafes and do a bit of people watching. You will see thousands of people crossing the square, watching the street theatre and having their pictures taken with the many pigeons and human statues here. It is up to you to decide which statues merit your loose change. Over the years the standard of the performers has gone down hill somewhat. Indeed most of them no longer stand still at all. Some however have intricate home made costumes and are clearly experts in their chosen field of street theatricals. At one side of the square lies the majestic Royal Palace which is the official place of residence of Queen Beatrice of the Netherlands when she is staying in town. At the other side lies the famous white stone pillar, the National Monument erected in 1956 to remember the victims of World War II.

Dam Square Highlights.

The square divides two of the city’s busiest shopping streets, the Kalverstraat and Nieuwendijk. Here you will find all the major Dutch and international high street names. If you are looking for something a little more up market then be sure to explore the Bijenkorf and Magna Plaza shopping centres that lie opposite and just behind Dam Square consecutively. One of the city’s most popular attractions is Madame Toussauds which looks out over the square. Don’t worry there are lots of internationally recognisable celebrities here as well as the more locally identifiable Dutch faces. There’s more here than just wax figures since many of the exhibits incorporate multimedia interactivity which will certainly keep younger visitors entertained as well as the adults. For a truly interactive and spooky experience lasting over an hour head to the nearby Amsterdam Dungeons. Here you and your guests can enjoy a scary but fun educational experience and learn about the darker history of the city. There’s even a rollercoaster and a brilliantly ghoulish gift shop at the end of the tour.
