The Amstelveld Studio 1 apartment can be found in the historic old centre of Amsterdam. The street runs parallel to the glorious Prinsengracht, one of four stunning canals that circle the city known collectively as the Canal Belt. Unsurprisingly the area is extremely popular with tourists with cameras. The attractive tall leaning buildings, footbridges and house boats have come to represent Amsterdam to many. It is quite amazing to learn that the city once considered demolishing the houses in the area since they had become very run down in the years following the war and there were plans for a new highway into the city. An estimated 22,000 homes in Amsterdam were never reclaimed after the war by their Jewish owners as they did not survive the holocaust. Many of the Canal Belt buildings were not only homes but also Jewish owned offices and warehouses. In 2010 the whole of the old city centre of Amsterdam was added to UNESCO’s list of protected places of important historical and architectural importance.
If you would like to find out more about Amsterdam during the war years then be sure to visit the Anne frank House, Holland’s most visited museum. Here you can learn about Anne and her family and friends’ lives in the tiny rooftop annexe where they hid from the Nazi regime during the war until their discovery. Climb through the secret doorway into their hide-away and see Anne’s actual diary and notes. The museum offers an insight into the history of ‘tolerance’ around the world and encourages visitors to consider their own actions in the future. The museum offers an enlightening, moving and thought-provoking experience for visitors of all ages. As the museum is extremely popular all year round you are advised to get there as early as possible in order to avoid the extremely long queues that occur particularly in the summer months.Location - Area: Canal Belt, Dam Square, Red Light District, Amstel, Leidse Square, Rembrandt Square, Museum Square
