Dam Square itself is the jewel of Amsterdam. A thriving busy plaza filled with people, buskers, street performers and human statues at all times of the day and night, there is always something new to see. Of course Amsterdam has many jewels in its crown. Be sure to take any of the roads outwards from behind the palace and you will find yourself in the world famous Canal Belt. Possibly the most beautiful and oldest part of the city, the picturesque narrow streets, long canals, little bridges and 17th century leaning canal-side townhouses are absolutely breathtaking. Try to visit at least once at night time when the canals are lit up beautifully by little lights under the bridges.
If you are interested in the history of the city then head to Amsterdam’s Historical Museum, also now known simply as Amsterdam Museum. Located just a few minutes walk from your apartment it offers an insight into the rich history of this incredible European capital city. The story is told to you chronologically and spread over three floors of an impressive ancient building which once used to be the city’s orphanage. From religion, folklore and art to social subcultures, entertainment and prostitution - the city’s amazing history is revealed in the most enlightening way. If you thought history was boring then this museum will change you mind!
If you are looking for a gift for friends or relatives back home then why not head to the nearby floating Flower Market at the end of Rokin? Here you can arrange for authentic Dutch tulip bulbs to be sent to their address. An unusual but hugely popular idea, it is certainly one or two less presents for you to carry home on the plane!Location - Area: Jordaan, Canal Belt, 9 Streets, Dam Square, Red Light District, Rembrandt Square
