Situated in a scenic tree lined street, this Amsterdam accommodation affords a privileged location, combining close proximity to the city centre with an authentic residential neighbourhood. The Plantage district itself boasts a rich history, originating as an extension to the city for wealthy residents who desired green recreational areas. During the 19th century, the district boasted numerous dance halls, theatres and bars, attracting many writers, actors and affluent Jewish citizens. Of course everything changed with the instigation of the Second World War, with the nearby Hollandsche Schouwburg, offering permanent and temporary expositions detailing the history of persecution as suffered by the Jewish community. This poignant memorial marks the place where thousands of Jewish residents were detained before deportation to concentration camps, commemorated by an obelisk and memorial chapel.
At the end of the street lies the impressive Hortus Botanical Gardens, an ancient treasure that was first established in 1638 as a herb garden for Amsterdam’s doctors and pharmacists.
