You will find the beautiful Brouwer Canal Apartment located in perhaps the prettiest district of Amsterdam in the very centre. The front of the building looks out onto the stunning Brouwersgracht Canal lined with pretty house boats and large trees. At night time the canal is lit up beautifully by little lights under the bridges. Amsterdam’s famous Canal Belt area was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2010 as it is considered to be of great architectural and historical importance. Amazingly the characteristic leaning houses in the area narrowly missed being demolished altogether in the 1970s when many buildings had run into disrepair following the war and controversial plans were made to build a huge road to connect the city with outlying areas. Thankfully following many actual street battles with local residents, politicians and police the area was saved and the road was not built. Sadly much of the nearby Jewish district, the Waterlooplein, was destroyed already to make way for the Metro development.
If you would like to find out more about Amsterdam’s rich history then why not pay a visit to the extremely interesting Amsterdam Historical Museum, also now known simply as Amsterdam Museum. Located just a few minutes walk from the apartment it offers a unique insight on this incredible European capital. The story is told to you chronologically and spread over three floors of an impressive ancient building which once used to be the city’s orphanage. From religion, folklore and art to subcultures, entertainment and prostitution - the city’s amazing history is revealed in the most enlightening way. If you thought history was boring then this museum will change you mind!Location - Area: Jordaan, Canal Belt, 9 Streets, Dam Square, Red Light District
- Nearest landmark: Anne Frank House
