The Laurierdwarsstraat Apartment is located in the enchanting Jordaan district of Amsterdam. The area is well known for its interesting array of shops, boutiques, restaurants and laid back cafes. Be sure to pay a visit to the excellent organic food market on the Noordemarkt where you can pick up delicious ingredients for cooking with back at the apartment. The district is located on the edge of the Canal Belt, certainly the prettiest neighbourhood in the city. The three main Amsterdam canal rings were added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2010 as they are considered to be of great architectural and historical importance. Amazingly the characteristic leaning houses in the area narrowly missed being demolished altogether in the 1970s when many buildings had run into disrepair following the war and controversial plans were made to build a huge road to connect the city with outlying areas. Thankfully following many actual street battles with local residents, politicians and police the area was saved and the road was not built. Sadly much of the nearby Jewish district, the Waterlooplein, was destroyed already to make way for the Metro development.
Follow the Prinsengracht north or clockwise and you will come to the beautiful Westermarkt area. It is home to Holland’s most visited museum, the Anne Frank House. Here you can learn about Anne and her family and friends’ lives in the tiny rooftop annexe where they hid form the Nazi regime during the war. You are able to climb through the secret doorway into their hide-away as well as see Anne’s actual diary and notes. The museum offers an insight into the history of ‘tolerance’ around the world and encourages visitors to consider their own actions in the future.Location - Area: Jordaan, Canal Belt, 9 Streets, Dam Square, Red Light District
