Located in the New Market district, one of the oldest parts of the city, you will find Central Station only a few minutes’ walk away. New Market, also known locally as Nieuwmarkt surrounds a charming square and castle-like building called De Waag – also the name of the apartment. Daily markets are held in the square including sales of books, clothes, antiques and local farmers’ produce on occasion.
Just a few minutes away in Jodenbreestraat you will find the famous Rembrandt House Museum. As the name suggests, this is the house Rembrandt lived and painted for a number of years. Rembrandt purchased the house in 1639 and lived there until he went bankrupt in 1656, when sadly all his belongings went on auction. He remained Amsterdam nearby until his death in 1669. The house itself was purchased and opened as a museum and gallery of his etchings, drawing and paintings several hundred years later in 1911. With the help of the actual original auction list of his belongings from 1656 historians have been able to piece together a reasonable replica of how the house would have looked at the time of Rembrandt’s residence.
On your way back to the apartment why not take a left turning half-way up the St Antoniesbreestraat under the spooky archway with the skull and cross bones insignia. This was originally once the graveyard of the beautiful Zuiderkerkhof, the Southern Church. Turn around and see an unusual and very much unexpected giant 5-story high waterfall on the side of a relatively new block of flats. It’s been there since the 1980s but remains one of Amsterdam’s little secrets.Location - Area: Dam Square, Red Light District, Amstel, Rembrandt Square
