Situated on the Prinsengracht canal, the longest and perhaps the prettiest of all canals in Amsterdam you could not wish for a more picturesque and central location. Nestled amongst the ancient townhouses along the canal you will be surprised by how quiet the neighbourhood is daytime and night time. You will find trees and charming house boats on your doorstep and all the major sites of Amsterdam are within walking distance.
Follow the canal back up towards Central Station and you will find the charming Westerkerk area which is also home to the world famous Anne Frank House Museum. Possibly the most popular museum in the Netherlands, here you can learn all about the terrible realities of life in Holland duration the occupation years and the history of tolerance around the world. You can also visit Anne’s family’s secret annexe and see Anne’s actual diary for yourself.
Follow the canal in the opposite direction and you will find yourself at the majestic Amstel River that flows south of the city. Look out for the famous Skinny Bridge that features in the 1971 James Bond film Diamonds are Forever. A bicycle ride along the Amstel to the ancient town of Oudekerk makes an excellent day out. Bicycles are available to hire from lots of different locations around the city and are a great way to see Amsterdam form a whole new perspective.
