Museum Square District
Located to the south of the old city centre, the Museum Square, or Museumplein as it is locally known, is the central cultural hub of the city. It is home to no less than four extremely popular galleries and museums, hence the name. Indeed Amsterdam boasts more than 60 museums and art galleries, more than any other city in the world. Museum Square is made up of two areas. The southern part is a large open grassy area where people regularly picnic and play football in the warmer months. At the northern end is a granite plaza incorporating a long fountain which is regularly transformed into an ice skating area at winter time. The whole site becomes packed with thousands of people at major celebratory events throughout the year including New Year’s Eve, the annual Queen’s Day celebrations (the birthday of the Queen Juliana, former Queen of the Netherlands), and whenever the Dutch football team is playing.

In 1999 urgently needed renovation work was carried out on the plaza including the addition of an underground parking area and supermarket. This most recent design was created by the architect Swen-Ingvar Andersson. Originally, the square dates back to the end of the 19th Century when it was the site of the Brouwersplein (Brewers’ Square). The name Museumplein later quickly came into common usage with the addition of several major galleries in the vicinity.

Museum Square District Highlights
Arguably the most interesting building in Museum Square has to be the majestic Rijksmuseum. Opened in 1885, the building was designed by Petrus J.H. Cuypers who also the created Amsterdam’s beautiful Central Station. Inside you will find an incredible collection of Dutch national treasures including some extremely popular artworks by artists Rembrandt, Vermeer and Frans Hals, to name but a few. Even though the museum is still being renovated and only part of the collection is currently on display, it is wise to give yourself a good hour and a half to get around to see everything you want to here.

To the south of the square lies the ever popular Van Gogh Museum which has the largest collection of the great master’s works including many of his very personal and revealing self portraits. To the west lies the newly refurbished Stedelijk Museum where you can mingle with the greatest artists of the 20th century including pre-war works by Picasso, Cézanne and Matisse as well as post-war creations by Lichtenstein, De Kooning and of course Warhol.
