Occupying a prime position upon Amsterdam’s bustling Dam Square, located within an historical building, is the fun filled, interactive waxwork museum – the world famous Madame Tussauds. Attracting thousands of visitors throughout the year, this entertaining experience allows visitors an opportunity to come face to face with the stars and celebrities of the past and present day.
Known
all over the world for its huge collection of impressive waxworks, Madame
Tussauds is a truly unique experience which is not to be missed whilst visiting
Amsterdam. Conveniently situated in the
heart of the city centre, upon Amsterdam’s famous Dam Square, this historic
building is home to the wax replicas of some of the world’s most prominent
icons and A-List celebrities. Each
figure is created with such intricate and fine detail, providing a true, life-like
resemblance to its model.
Originally
founded by the French sculptor Marie Tussaud, the first Madame Tussauds Waxwork
Museum was created in London in the 1800s.
The Amsterdam venue was the first of its kind outside of London which
led to the worldwide expansion of the museum. Madame Tussauds Amsterdam was first opened at
another premises within the city in 1971 but moved to its current location in
1991. It attracts visitors from across
the globe and boasts 6 floors of fantastic figures and interactive exhibitions.
The
figures themselves are made in London and then shipped to Amsterdam where they
are dressed and styled. Each figure
costs an incredible 85,000 Euros to create.
New figures are often added to the museum and older ones updated to the
current times. Several temporary
displays, such as ‘Three times Michael Jackson’ which depicts the stages in the
King of Pop’s life, are often hosted throughout the calendar.
Within
the museum are a wide range of themed areas such as Radio and TV, Authentic
History, Catwalk and Culture. The A-List
celebrities section is where you can have your picture taken with the likes of Twilight’s
Robert Pattinson, or Hollywood’s renowned couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt,
or why not head to the Music area and pose alongside Elvis, Madonna or Lady
Gaga. E.T., Marilyn Monroe and Charlie
Chaplin are just a few of the much-loved figures which can be found in the Film
area.
The
interactive Sports zone offers you the opportunity to practice your football
skills next to Ronaldinho and your fitness regime with the help of David
Beckham. If the likes of Barack Obama,
Nelson Mandela or even the Dalai Lama inspire you, then the World Leaders unit
is perfect. You can even meet members of
the Royal family such as Queen Beatrix and Princess Diana within the Royals
section.
Madame
Tussauds Amsterdam is open daily throughout the year and provides an
entertaining, action-packed afternoon out for adults and children alike. It is easily accessible, located just minutes
