Location

The Rozengracht II Apartment Amsterdam, as the name suggests, is located on the charming Rozengracht. The district extends from the pretty Westermarkt, home of the Anne Frank House Museum and the Homomonument. It is easy to walk there from Dam Square as the main road leads from behind the Royal Palace westwards.

Many regular trams travel from Central Station straight up Rozengracht in around 7 minutes depending on the traffic. You will pass all the major canals that make up the Canal Belt area. Possibly the most beautiful and oldest part of the city, the picturesque narrow streets, long canals, little bridges and 17th century leaning canal and townhouses are absolutely breathtaking. At night time the canals are lit up beautifully by little lights under the bridges. The main Amsterdam canal rings were added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2010 as they are considered to be of great architectural and historical importance. Amazingly the characteristic leaning houses in the area narrowly missed being demolished altogether in the 1970s when many buildings had run into disrepair following the war and controversial plans were made to build a huge road to connect the city with outlying areas. Thankfully following many actual street battles with local residents, politicians and police the area was saved and the road was not built. Sadly much of the nearby Jewish district, the Waterlooplein, was destroyed already to make way for the Metro development.

If you are exploring the historic city then don’t be afraid to explore the streets of the famous Red Light District. It is considered to be a very safe place these days. It is certainly a fascinating area to visit at night when the streets really come to life and the neon lights reflect atmospherically in the water of the canals. Please understand it is not allowed to take photos of the windows, no matter how tempting. The consequences may not be favourable.
