The stunning Vondelpark is not only the largest of Amsterdam’s city parks but also by far the most popular. This mile-long expanse of greenery attracts in excess of 10 million visitors every year. This narrow strip of land stretching north to south and measuring 120 acres dominates the southern portion of any city map. Located immediately south of the beautiful Canal Belt and flanked by the Leidseplein and the Museum Quarter, the park is perfectly positioned for both locals and visitors to the city to enjoy. Some of the city’s most expensive residential properties look out onto the park whilst the city’s glamorous high fashion shopping street P.C Hooftstraat is just a short walk away to the east.
The brainchild of prominent businessmen investing in the city, the Vondelpark was first opened to the public in 1865 and was known as the ‘New Park’. Today’s familiar name came into popular use following the installation of a large statue to celebrate the life of the 17th century Dutch poet and playwright Joost van den Vondel. The park itself is particularly cherished by the residents of Amsterdam and is protected for the future by its national monument status.

This stunning oasis in the very heart of the busy city is beautifully styled with open grassy landscaped areas, thousands of trees, ornamental gardens, pretty bridges and delightful water features. Day and night you will find people travelling through the park on bicycles, roller blades and even on horseback and of course on foot. On warm summer days the park is packed with people sun bathing, enjoying picnics and barbeques and occasionally paddling in the lake in the centre. There is a small outside performance area for live music and theatre in the summer months as well as three cafes spread throughout the park. Arguably the prettiest has to be the Blue Tea House located in the very centre of the park that was built in the 1930s and sports the typical Art Deco design of the period. Here you can enjoy a delicious frothy coffee or grab a cool beer as you recline on the large terrace or on the upper near-360 degree balcony. Look out for the unusual wildlife to be found in the park. As well as geese, ducks, heron and some surprisingly large fish in the lake, there is also a family of storks. Most famous are the hundreds of bright green parrots that have taken up residence in the park in recent years. You are sure to hear them squawking above your head during your visit. They are most active in the early evenings when they can be seen swooping and diving in huge flocks from tree to tree in search of tasty insects.Perfectly located in the heart of Amsterdam, the Vondelpark possesses so much unexpected beauty, space and outdoor comfort. It maintains a very special place in the hearts of both residents and visitors to the city.
