You are located in the Dapper district, named after a 17th century doctor and historian. The Dapper district was built in the 19th century and was originally populated by people from the working class. Later it became a popular location for Jewish people who built a Synagogue in 1928. During the Second World War most of them were deported by the Nazi occupier leaving the area desolated and destructed.
Nowadays it is a peaceful area that has excellent access to the historical city centre of Amsterdam. You can walk to the city centre and visit places like the Artis Zoo and Hortus Botanicus, which is a lovely and one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. Or continue walking and have a rest and a drink at one of the many terraces at Rembrandt Square.
Just around the corner you can take a tram to for example Dam Square, the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh museum. Or visit the recently renovated Naval Museum that is only minutes away from your location. And if you want to know more about the Jewish people who used to live in the Dapper district and other areas in Amsterdam we suggest you visit the close by Jewish Museum.
