Amsterdam’s Christmas markets 2013

Amsterdam’s Christmas markets 2013

When you head out to Amsterdam during December, you have plenty of opportunities to get your Christmas shopping done. In many areas of the city winter markets emerge, where vendors bring to bear great merchandise under fabulous fairy lights and Christmas trees as well as seasonal snacks and drinks.

Strolling across the Christmas markets is fun not least because there is little effort involved and even if you are not actively looking for presents you’ll get plenty of ideas. All the markets are non-ticketed free events. Some of them are Christmas versions of permanent markets and others are pop-up events that are rolled out especially for the occasion.

All the markets are near apartments rented out by Amsterdam Apartments, so you will likely come across the stalls when you venture into town. The stalls lining the tourist area near the Central Station are a good starting point from where you can work your way gradually via the Winter Market at the Dam to the Leidseplein (which includes an ice rink), Rembrandtplein and Koningsplein, all of which also feature more or less permanent Christmas markets from December up till the early days of January.

For the adventurous, there’s even a midnight market which is held between 23:00 and 05:00 on 21 December at the Toren in Amsterdam Noord (north). Don’t think you will be the only one going – this market is very popular with stalls ranging from vintage fashion to artisan bags, hairdressers and fashion experts who can pimp your jeans to the most wondrous garments. There are also musicians and DJ’s throughout the night.
The various editions of the Pure Markt (see dates and locations below) are also worthwhile, because these are rather sizeable events with over 80 stall holders many of whom will sell sustainable, organic and artisanal merchandise such as children’s toys, furniture items, cosmetics and candles. There’s also plenty of delicious food.

Winter Market, Beursplein & Damrak, daily until 12 January 2014
Funky Sinterklaas Market, Westergasfabriek, 1 December
Pure Winter Market, Amstelpark, 8 December
Sissy Boy Christmas Market, Amstelkerk, 14 December
Funky Xmas Market, Westergasfabriek, 15 December
Pure Winter Market, Beatrixpark, 15 December
Midnight Market, Toren, 21 December
Pure Winter Market, Park Frankendael, 22 December.

In case this is not enough, head out to the market where the locals go; the Albert Cuypmarkt. This is Amsterdam’s largest market with over 300 stalls. There are plenty of clothes stalls too and apparently many Amsterdammers only will eat Christmas turkey that’s been ordered from this market. What's more, there is loads of fruit and veg.
