Location

You will find the Old Warehouse Apartment located a short walk from Central Station in the oldest part of the city close to Nieuwmarkt and the Red Light District. A short walk north will bring you to NEMO, the city’s famous Science Museum. Inside there is a strictly hands ON policy. The exhibits are very interactive which will please children particularly. The building itself resembles the bow of a huge ship rising out of the water. In the summer months you can join local Amsterdammers on the roof to sunbathe. It also provides the most amazing views across the city all year round.

The famous Rembrandt House Museum is located just at the end of the street on the Jodenbreestraat. As the name suggests, this is the house in which Rembrandt lived and painted for a number of years. Rembrandt purchased the house in 1639 and lived there until he went bankrupt in 1656, when sadly all his belongings went on auction. He remained Amsterdam nearby until his death in 1669. The house itself was purchased and opened as a museum and gallery of his etchings, drawing and paintings several hundred years later in 1911. With the help of the actual original auction list of his belongings from 1656 historians have been able to piece together a reasonable replica of how the house would have looked at the time of Rembrandt’s residence.

Across the road from here lies Cafe De Sluyswacht. Possibly one of the most wonky buildings in the city, its charming lop-sided exterior seems to constantly attract the attention of passing photographers. Inside this old 17th century lock-keeper’s cottage it is snugly and warm in the winter months and sells reasonably priced beers and coffee all year round. Meanwhile in the warmer months you might prefer to sit out on the charming terrace that overlooks the water and the beautiful Montelbaans Tower that Rembrandt once painted.

The famous Waterlooplein Flea Market is only minutes away from the apartment which is a great source for unusual photo opportunities. You are guaranteed to find the weird and the wonderful here. A great place to pick up unusual gifts and souvenirs of your visit to the city.
