Location

Located, as the name would suggest, in the city’s pretty Jordaan district, this delightful apartment boasts the perfect setting for accessing most of Amsterdam’s most popular visitor attractions with ease. The Jordaan itself was created in the 1600s as housing provision for the working classes of the city. It later became massively overpopulated and fell into disrepair. Even as recently as the 1970s it was fairly unrecognisable and some of the most dilapidated buildings were planned for demolition. Following major public protests it was decided to restore the buildings as much as possible. Today the district has become one of the most desirable neighbourhoods in the Netherlands in which to live.

Be sure to explore the Canal Belt district that runs alongside the Jordaan. Made up of four great canals that drape around the oldest part of the city like an ornate necklace, they possess an incredibly charming ambience and are delightful to wander around during the day and night time. In the evenings the little bridges are lit up by fairy lights, prettily reflecting in the water.

Just a short walk away to the south lies the most famous address in the Netherlands and the most visited museum – 263 Prinsengracht, the Anne Frank House Museum. Here you can learn about Anne and her family and friends’ difficult lives in the tiny rooftop annexe where they hid from the Nazi regime during the war. You are able to climb through the secret doorway into their hide-away as well as see Anne’s actual diary and notes. The museum offers an insight into the history of ‘tolerance’ around the world and encourages visitors to consider their own actions in the future. This extremely enlightening, moving and thought provoking experience is recommended for visitors of all ages. Get there as early as possible to avoid the huge queues that occur later in the mornings daily or book ahead on line for a specific time slot.

Getting to Central Station from the apartment is very easy. Head south to Westermarkt or immediately west on to Marnixstraat and hop on any of the trams heading towards Dam Square along the Raadhuisstraat. The journey takes around 11 minutes, depending on traffic.
