Location

This delightful apartment boasts a fantastic location to the immediate east of the old city centre in an area known at the Dapperbuurt. It actually lies on the very cusp of the adjacent leafy district of the Plantage too. From here you have ideal access to some of the city’s most interesting attractions and within easy walking distance from the centre. If you prefer to use public transport to get to Central Station then you can easily hop aboard a tram at either of two stops very close by. Indeed the tram actually trundles past the end of the street on which the apartment sits.

Amsterdam has more museums than any other city. The last count was just short of sixty so you won’t be short of interesting cultural places to visit during your stay. By far the nearest museum to the apartment is the Tropenmuseum which lies literally just across the street. This fascinating museum hosts a world class collection of the non-western exhibits and artefacts. After your visit you might like to check out the adjoining park, the Oosterpark, for a quiet picnic or simply enjoy a book under the shade of one of the many trees here. The central lake is particularly elegant.

Wandering west along the Plantage Middenlaan towards the old centre will bring you past several important city memorials that pay respect and remembrance to the Jewish people that were deported and later murdered by the Nazis who occupied the country during the Second World War. Be sure to go inside the Hollandsche Schouwburg, once a popular city theatre, which was the location where men, women and children were brought before being escorted to the concentration camps in Eastern Europe. Today much of the building has been demolished but there is much to read upstairs in the small museum area and a garden for reflection and remembrance as well as a huge wall of names and an eternal flame. A second memorial can be found in nearby Wertheim Park, a tiny little pretty city park where the ashes of some of those who perished in Auschwitz are laid. This is a very sensitive and tragic part of Amsterdam’s recent history and visitors come from around the globe to pay their respects to such important city sites. Most visitors to the city will be more familiar with the Anne Frank House Museum on Prinsengracht. It remains the country’s most visited building averaging at around a million people every year.

Pop into the nearby Hortus Botanicus (horticultural museum) on a cold day and investigate the hot houses and their gigantic cacti and look for that perfect unusual souvenir of your holiday at the nearby fantastic Waterlooplein flea market.
