Head to Amsterdam Fashion Week for an intake of fresh fashion ideas

Amsterdam and fashion? It’s not an obvious connection for the casual observer perhaps, but when you dig a little, Amsterdam and fashion are definitely something of a match. A number of highly successful fashion designers have set up shop in this town in recent decades and the likes of Jan Taminiau count  both Lady Gaga and Beyonce as their regular clientele. It is partially thanks to great people like this that the fashion shows during Amsterdam Fashion Week are eye openers too.

The Amsterdam Fashion Week takes place twice a year and the winter edition this month is set to be promising. It brings together the cream of the international scene who will be catering to both specialists and the general public at large. The week takes place from 17 to 27 January 2014 and aims to give international and Amsterdam based fashion talent a platform to display their creations in public.

On a practical level, this fashion event consists of many free public events including pop-up stores, exhibitions, fashion shows and walking routes. ‘Normal’ fashion outlets in Amsterdam participate by offering special deals including interesting discounts on spectacular garments. In case you want to go, keep an eye out for media reports on the event – both the local and the international press usually buzzes with excitement and gossip during Amsterdam Fashion Week.

If you do not want to wait out for the media but find your own bearings, head out to the Westergasfabriek, where you will see the odd celebrity early on in the week, as this is where insiders show each other the first glimpses of upcoming collections. For the precise details of all events during the Amsterdam Fashion Week, just check out the schedule which will be available on the DOWNTOWN website at the beginning of January 2014. Mercedes Benz is the event’s main sponsor this year.

“To mark the 10th anniversary of the event (hence, the 20th edition) this year, 10 public Downtown events will be organised at 10 cultural venues during the 10-day fashion extravanganza,” according to the organisers of the event, which has for this occasion on some (but by far not all) of the event’s websites been re-branded the Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam.

The majority of the events are connected to cultural locations characteristic of Amsterdam, which means that they are open to you, me and everyone else. The great thing with this set up is that us mere mortals will have a chance to mingle with the fashion elite. The cultural centres will organise dozens of parties and impromptu events where this is possible. Of course there are also additional exhibitions, workshops and lectures about everything that goes on in the fashion world and the catwalk, so you will have the opportunity to nourish your intellectual as well as your aesthetic appetite. Many of the venues very close to the centre of Amsterdam where many of Amsterdam Apartment's rentals are located too, so chances are you will not have to walk very far if you join the events.

This year there are also specially created free apps for both iPhone and Android smartphones apps for details of venues and the latest news.
