Let me guess… you are visiting Amsterdam for a short time, you are staying in one of Amsterdam Apartment’s great residences and the dates of your stay include February 14th. Right? Then, the laws of probability would suggest that you are on a romantic city break. If that’s the case by all means read on because I am going to give you a few ideas for fantastically romantic things to do in this wonderful city.
First of all, congratulations. You have picked the absolute best city to visit! Amsterdam is incredibly romantic and your adventure is destined to be a success. Which other town in Europe offers people the chance to get married for a day?? None I daresay! Wed & Walk is wildly romantic. The organisers of this luminous idea offer couples the use of wedding clothing including the bridal dress and groom’s gown, music, 2 rings and of course the obligatory photo. As of the beginning of February until the beginning of March, an impromptu pop-up tent has been invented for the ceremonies to be performed. For more details, surf to the organisation’s website, where you can also book your ceremony. I won’t be joining the queue because sadly, my 60+ true-to-his-hippie-roots boyfriend is not into getting married and all invocations involving apples, serpents et al. thus far proffered vague
reassurances… Your vows will be valid for one entire day although I doubt they will show up on any register. You can pick the 14th as your Big Day or any other day.
A really romantic idea is to board a candlelight cruise or go on a bus ride around the city. The cruise boats and bus companies in Amsterdam are totally geared up for Valentine’s and will organise nice surprises.
When you’re in a love triangle or suspect that you may be, lure your partner to the Valentijnsloop (Valentine’s Run) which is an event for singles and couples and involves a 5 km evening run around the very romantic Vondelpark. It’s a good opportunity to find new people be they prospective lovers or running partners, so the organisers make us believe. It’s at this venue that -when you play your cards right- you will be able casually lose that third wheel that -surprise, surprise- showed up too…
In for a classier experience? Why not book tickets to the Concertgebouw Classics Celebrates Love event? The Royal Concertgebouw offers a great setting for a romantic evening in style.
Don’t do this if you don’t know your partner too well yet, but the Ctaste restaurant’s invention of dining blindfolded could be fun. You won’t literally be blindfolded but be taken to your table after which all the lights go out. You will enjoying food in a completely different way by trusting your senses. The restaurant offers this experience not only on Valentine’s day, and is highly popular so make sure to book beforehand.
Whatever you get up to, make sure to include a trip to the Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge). Ancient legend has it that kissing on this beautiful little bridge over the River Amstel will lead to everlasting love. In case the Skinny Bridge is too far out of your way, try any of the other bridges.
