The Stadsschouwburg presents visitors to Amsterdam with the opportunity to enjoy the best of Dutch theatre in a luxurious setting.

Theatre lovers hoping to catch an authentic Dutch production during their stay in Amsterdam should see what's on at the Stadsschouwburg (Municipal Theatre).

This building has a special place in the hearts of most Amsterdammers and is home to the theatre group Toneelgroep Amsterdam, one of the biggest and most prestigious drama companies in the Netherlands.

When feasting your eyes upon the programme at the Stadsschouwburg, expect to see a rich and diverse line-up brimming with performances from local acts and artists from countries all over the world alike.

As well as theatrical productions covering a range of genres, you could also buy tickets to dance or music shows and work by the local youth theatre. Among the companies that regularly stage their productions at the venue are Orkater, the North Dutch Drama, Theatre Ro and Scenic Plays.

The venue is also known for premiering tons of high-profile performances, as well as hosting major events such as contemporary dance festival Julidans and the Holland Festival. Whatever your preferences are, you're bound to find something at the Stadsschouwburg that suits you.

Even if you're not particularly passionate about drama, you should still pay a visit to the building if only to admire the architecture and learn about its fascinating history.

The theatre that stands on the square today was built between 1892 and 1894 and replaced its predecessor, which burned down in 1890. Its style is neo-renaissance, after architects deemed the neo-classical appearance of the previous theatre to be too old-fashioned.

Prepare to have your breath taken away by the building's magnificent entrance and grand staircase, as well as the opulent air created by its golden chandeliers and plush velvet curtains.

Stadsschouwburg is situated in the Leidseplein, a lively square in the centre of the city that is close to an amazing array of restaurants and bars, so aim to stay in an Amsterdam apartment nearby if you can.
