What to do on New Year’s Day in Amsterdam

When you’ve been to New Year’s Eve celebrations you might take it easy on New Year’s Day in Amsterdam. Most people do. Slouching around whilst eating oliebollen and appelflappen, watching tv or watching a movie on the couch of your comfortable Amsterdam Apartments accommodation  is always  an option.

In case you are so hung over you would normally step under a cold shower, you can opt to do this in the company of around 100 or so Amsterdammers by going to the Nieuwjaarsduik (New Year’s Dive) in the Sloterplas. This is a big pond in the West of Amsterdam and the dive takes place between noon and around 13:00. It’s organised by semi official authorities and usually attracts some media coverage.  For everyone who participates there is mulled wine, hot chocolate and pea soup around a hot, hot, hot fire.

For active inclined people, there are also plenty of things to do. The list of museums that open on New Year’s Day is rather long, and it includes the Anne Frank House, the Rijksmuseum, Madame Tussaud’s among others (see the complete list at the end of this story).

If this is too much activity for the start of the New Year, why not think of taking a cruise through the canals or enjoy a spot of bargain hunting in the many shops that have sales on?

Or if you want to get to know Amsterdam’s history and have three hours to spare, you could also opt for a guided walk around Amsterdam with Sandeman’s free tours. Be sure to tip the tour guide generously afterwards – I learnt the entire guide script off by heart and it’s pretty hard work!

In case you feel like taking a stroll by yourself, be sure to enjoy the light sculptures in the Amsterdam Light Festival. They have been created by leading artists including Buckminster Fuller and some of them illuminate buildings in splendid ways. Various bridges are also part of this light festival, which ends on January 19th, so you will have plenty of time to explore them all.

If you fancy a bike ride, you rent bikes at MacBike which are all over town, as are many other bike rental places.
